Ketosis

The foundation of a Ketogenic Diet

For ketosis to happen, the glycogen levels in your liver need to be diminished to where your body ramps up its access to stored fat.

Your insulin levels start to drop. At the same time your glucagon levels increase, which in turn releases fatty acids (which are stored as triglyceride in your adipocytes) into the blood stream.

These fatty acids are then converted to ketone bodies in your liver. When this happens, your body will use the ketone bodies it produced as alternative fuel to preserve glycogen as some tissues of your body can only be fueled by glucose.

Your #1 goal during the first week is to get into ketosis.

Your Protein Macro is a GOAL

It will preserve your muscle and protect your body from damaging protein deficiency.

Your Carbohydrate Macro is a LIMIT

Getting you body into ketosis and keeping it there requires you to limit your carbohydrate intake to+/- 25 net carbohydrates.

Your Fat Macro is a VARIABLE and the amount is adjusted to you goal

Fat is the macro-nutrient that determines your success on a ketogenic diet. Weight loss, maintenance or building muscle - the correct macro formula is the key.

More than just
Weight Loss

Other Health Benefits of Ketosis

  • In ketosis, appetite is naturally reduced. Your insulin levels stabilize, reducing cravings. This is the main advantage to using a ketogenic diet for weight loss compared to any other diet.

  • Reduced Blood Sugar and Insulin Levels. This diet is optimal to reverse Type 2 Diabetes.

  • A ketogenic lifestyle improves good HDL cholesterol, decreases bad LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

  • Ketones affect inflammatory processes and structures. When your body is in a state of ketosis, your liver creates ketones that burn more efficiently than carbohydrates. This process creates far less reactive oxygen species and secondary free radicals that can damage your cellular and mitochondrial cell membranes, proteins and DNA.

  • Mental clarity and lots of energy. Ketosis up-regulates mitochondrial biogenesis in the brain - in short, ketones are like jet fuel for the brain.

My Keto Heroes

I base my keto approach on these guys here. Why? Because they have been studying keto for decades and have been pioneers in their fields not only talking the talk, but also walking the walk when it comes to the ketogenic lifestyle.

All their research is backed by science, confirmed in many peer-reviewed studies and frankly, the results speak for themselves.
